The Gold Standard for Replacing Natural Teeth Learn About Dental Implants From Dr. Valenzuela

Dental implants are small titanium posts that support prosthetic teeth. Implants are surgically placed in the jaw and fuse to the bone tissue over the course of a few months. The results are so stable, you may forget your teeth are anything but natural.

Professionals and patients around the world agree that the benefits of dental implants are simply unmatched. That is why our Los Algodones dental office is committed to providing the highest quality dental treatment and allowing you to enjoy the gold standard of restorative dentistry.

The Sooner You Get Implants, the Better

Request a Consultation Today

The long-term effects of missing teeth may cause you to regret not getting implants sooner. Tooth loss does more than affect your appearance; it also negatively affects your oral health. Tooth roots play a critical role in the health of your gums and jawbone. When you lose a tooth, the lack of stimulation can cause your oral structures to deteriorate. As this atrophy continues, your remaining teeth will shift, your gums will recede, and eventually, your facial structure will even appear sunken and aged.

Fortunately, this can all be avoided. Dental implants act as artificial substitutes for tooth roots, stimulating the jawbone each time you eat or speak. The sooner you get implants, the faster you stop the consequences of tooth loss from affecting your health and appearance. Take the first step by requesting a consultation. Consultation

Dr. Valenzuela will examine your mouth and perform diagnostic tests to determine bone density and the ideal placement for your implant. Our Los Algodones office is equipped with advanced digital X-ray and cone-beam CT scanning technology that expands our diagnostic capabilities and allows for more precise placement of implants.

Preparatory Treatment

Some patients will need preparatory treatments to create a healthy foundation for implants. This can include tooth extractions or treatment for gum disease. Some people require bone grafting to restore the bone density needed to support the implant.

Implant Placement

The first step is numbing the treatment area so that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. If dental work makes you anxious, we can also provide sedation to help you relax. Once you are comfortable, Dr. Valenzuela will make incisions in the gum tissue so that the titanium implant can be inserted. Dr. Valenzuela will use a surgical guide to direct the implant into the proper position and optimize results.

Healing Period

It usually takes about three to six months for the implant to fuse with the bone, a process called osseointegration. Dr. Valenzuela often can place a temporary crown, bridge, or denture so that you won't have to go without teeth during the healing period.

Abutment Placement

If the abutment has not already been placed, it will be done after the implant has fused with the jaw. This is a minor surgery in which the gums are opened and the abutment is attached to the implant. The restoration will eventually be attached to this connector piece. It normally takes a couple of weeks to heal.

Designing the Restoration

Using our sophisticated 3-D imaging system, Dr. Valenzuela will scan the implant area to create a precise digital impression. These scans will be used by our in-house lab to create our incredibly lifelike restorations that are both beautiful and comfortable in your mouth. We can often design, mill, and place the restoration on the same day.

Restoration Placement

Dr. Valenzuela will test fit your restoration to ensure it is comfortable and blends seamlessly with your other teeth. After any last-minute adjustments are made and both of you are happy with the results, the dentist will attach the restoration to the implant.

Comparing Implant Dentures
And Traditional Dentures
Which Is Right For You?

Both traditional dentures and implant-supported dentures replace teeth, but they have key differences. If you are considering replacing lost teeth but are not sure which kind of dental work is right for you, Dr. Valenzuela can describe the differences between these two types of dentures during a consultation at his Los Algodones practice, located close to Yuma, AZ, and Mexicali, MX.

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures, which have a pink, gum-colored acrylic base that rests on the gums, are initially more affordable than dental implants. Although traditional dentures replace missing teeth, they have several drawbacks:

denture

1) They are prone to slipping and sliding, especially when you are eating or talking. This may force you to limit what foods you eat. In addition, the longer you are missing teeth, the more your jawbone will shrink, which increases the risk of your dentures moving.

2) Traditional dentures accelerate bone loss. Every time you bite down or clench your teeth, the pressure wears down the alveolar ridge that the denture rests on.

3) Bone loss will require you to regularly get your dentures relined or replaced to adjust to the changing shape of your jaw.

4) You will have to go without teeth at times. Traditional dentures need to be removed at night to be cleaned and to allow the soft tissue in your mouth to breathe and prevent gum disease.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Dental implants are the most complete tooth restoration technique available and offer unparalleled benefits of security and stability. Implants also preserve your oral health.

Denture implant

Because implant-supported dentures are supported by implants that fuse with the jawbone, they offer unmatched stability. You will be able to speak clearly and eat your favorite foods without worrying that your denture will slip and embarrass you.

Instead of accelerating bone loss like traditional dentures, dental implants actually encourage new bone growth in the jaw, keeping it strong and preventing it from wasting away.

Implant-supported dentures are the closest thing to having your original teeth back. In fact, you care for them just like natural teeth: by brushing and flossing and keeping regular appointments with your dentist.

"A wonderful experience from start to finish."

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

Am I a candidate for implant dentistry?

The best way to determine your candidacy is by visiting our clinic near Palm Springs, California and Yuma, Arizona, so Dr. Valenzuela can thoroughly evaluate your tooth replacement options. It is particularly important that a patient has sufficient bone to properly support the implant. Dr. Valenzuela has several techniques he can use to overcome poor bone density, including All-on-4 implants, mini dental implants, and bone grafting. However, patients who suffer from uncontrolled diabetes, certain blood and bone disorders, or bone marrow cancer may not be candidates for implant dentistry.

How do I prepare for dental implant treatment?

In order to undergo dental implant treatment at our Los Algodones, Mexico, dental office, you will need to be in good oral and overall health. In the months leading up to your visit, maintain your health and abstain from unhealthy habits like smoking, which increases your risk of complications. If you are lacking sufficient jawbone tissue, Dr. Valenzuela can perform a bone graft several months prior to your procedure. Once you are healed, you will come back to our office for the next phases of your treatment.

How long does this dental procedure take?

Treatment time for dental implants varies widely depending on the particulars of each case. The entire process can range from five months if no preparatory procedures are required to two years for more complex cases. During your initial evaluation, Dr. Valenzuela will be able to give you a more accurate estimate.

Is dental implant treatment painful?

In most cases, the placement of implants causes only minor discomfort; many patients are surprised at how little pain they experience during their dental treatment. We offer advanced conscious sedation options for patients to ensure treatment is as comfortable, relaxing, and pain-free as possible. After the initial surgery, most dental patients are able to return to their usual daily activities within one day and require only mild pain medication.

Are dental implants difficult to maintain?

Dental implants are exceptionally easy to maintain. Once your replacement teeth are anchored to your new titanium implants, simply perform normal dental care. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss regularly, and schedule regular dental check-ups to have your implants and restorations examined and professionally cleaned.
