While braces are still a staple of orthodontic care, more and more people are turning to Invisalign®. The clear plastic aligner trays of Invisalign® are practically invisible, allowing you to undergo a months-long orthodontic procedure without anyone noticing.

We have used Invisalign® at our Los Algodones, Baja California to treat a number of problems caused by crooked teeth, including teeth that are rotated or twisted. Let’s consider why this is a problem and how Invisalign® can help.

Problems Caused By Rotated Teeth

When a person’s teeth are rotated, this can lead to a number of issues with smile aesthetics and general dental health.

In terms of smile aesthetics, rotated teeth can leave your smile looking quite flawed. Some people feel very self-conscious about their rotated teeth, causing them to feel hesitant about laughing, smiling, and speaking, even around people they have known for many years.

In terms of dental health, rotated teeth could throw off overall dental alignment. Biting and chewing could be uncomfortable. There’s also a risk of the rotated teeth contributing to teeth grinding, which can lead to tooth damage, jaw joint pain, and even TMJ disorders if left untreated.

How Invisalign® Works

Invisalign® trays are worn at all times except when a patient is eating, drinking, or sleeping. This amounts to roughly 22 hours a day with the aligners on. After two weeks, patients discard their current aligner and move on to the next aligner in sequence. Over the course of many months, teeth can be gradually straightened and all of a patients teeth properly aligned.

The Degree of Tooth Rotation

When treating tooth rotation with Invisalign®, the degree of the tooth rotation matters. Severely twisted or rotated teeth may not be able to be treated simply given the nature of the dental arch and tooth structure. During the consultation process, we will determine whether or not a patient’s tooth is too twisted for Invisalign® treatment.

Advantages of Invisalign®

There are a few key advantages to undergoing Invisalign® rather than getting traditional braces:

What If a Tooth Is Too Twisted?

When a tooth is too twisted for Invisalign®, the best options can vary. In some cases, traditional orthodontic care with braces is a good option. The brackets, wires, bands, and other tools can help correct tooth rotation with greater effectiveness than Invisalign®.

In some cases, oral surgery may be recommended to address an extremely twisted tooth. This could even involve extraction of the tooth and replacement with a crown supported by a dental implant.
