If you have misaligned or severely crooked teeth, you may be considering orthodontic treatment to achieve a straighter, more symmetrical smile. While traditional metal braces have been an effective orthodontic option for many years, some patients, especially adults and teens, are averse to them since they are noticeable when smiling. Invisalign®, however, involves clear, removable aligners that discreetly shift your teeth into place. If you are not sure which treatment option is suited to your unique needs, Dr. Jose Valenzuela, Jr. can explain the differences and help you choose between Invisalign® vs. braces at his Los Algodones, Baja California, Mexico, dental practice.

How Traditional Braces Work

Woman with metal braces. Traditional braces consist of metal brackets that are attached to each tooth, a bonding or band that attaches the bracket to the tooth, and the archwire, which connects the different brackets and exerts a light pressure, thus effectively moving your teeth into their proper alignment.

The Invisalign® system is the subtle alternative to metal braces, as it gently straightens your teeth using a series of clear, removable aligners.

Patients need to wear braces 24 hours a day, everyday, for about two years, to achieve desired results. Typically, patients will need to visit the office every month, to check the fit of the braces, and make necessary adjustments.

Apart from being conspicuous, traditional braces are disliked by some patients since the wires and brackets can cause discomfort. Metal braces also impede patients from eating certain hard or sticky foods.

Traditional braces, however, are more effective than their orthodontic alternatives in addressing complex alignment issues. Also, they do not require additional cleaning, apart from regular twice-a-day brushing and flossing.

Experience the Invisalign® Difference

Woman wearing Invisalign® aligners. The Invisalign® system is the subtle alternative to metal braces, as it gently straightens your teeth using a series of clear, removable aligners. Every set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before moving to the next set in the series.

During your initial consultation, Dr. Valenzuela will thoroughly examine your mouth to determine if Invisalign® is right for you. Next, he will take impressions of your teeth, as well as take intraoral and extraoral photographs, so that a series of clear plastic trays can be fabricated according to your specifications.

Patients are required to wear their aligners for at least 22 hours a day, and they can be removed for eating and brushing. Depending on your case, the Invisalign® aligners can move your teeth into position in six to 18 months.

Patients typically need to visit Dr. Valenzuela four to six months after treatment begins, where he can monitor the progress of your orthodontic treatment, and make any necessary adjustments. Since the aligners are removable, you can take them out during special occasions, as well as for cleaning.
